Location Sketch: White Room

Overview:

The white room is located inside a research facility owned by the XXXXXX. The facility is ran by Dr. XXXXXX, and his assistant XXXXX. The room is 8X8 square, made from titanium and painted with white high gloss paint. The titanium plates cover each wall, the floor, and the ceiling, and are nearly seamless, so that the room appears to be a solid white box from end to end, top to bottom.

There is no apparent door. The door exists, but it cannot be seen or felt until it is opened. There is a place to lay down, which slides out from the wall. Three times a day, a small door, no larger than an iPad, opens, and a tray of food is inside. Box inside this door is equally seamless, and back lit by a small LED light. The door stays open until the tray is placed back, and then closes.

There is a table, which also rises on it’s own from the ground as one solid piece, no legs, just a large rectangular box that rises out of the ground. On the table is a small white cardboard box, wrapped in white paper. Inside is a white iPod, with one track, which gives a brief explanation (which may/may not be true), and instructions on what will happen next.

From the ceiling, there is white noise, pumped through speakers into the room. It is noticeable at first, as echoes off the smoth metalic reverberant walls, but it quickly fades into the background and cannot even be heard or detected. Inside that white noise, is a series of frequencies that are not audible to human ears, but have shown signs of being able to make the human spirit more malleable, or open, to the spiritual realm.

This room is meant as a way to wash the candidate of extraneous interference from the outside world, before entering the Dark Room.

·         Titanium’s most common compound, titanium dioxide, is a popular photocatalyst and is used in the manufacture of white pigments.[4]

Location Sketch: Sriklan Islands

Sri-Klan Islands (need a new name)

Somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, south of Hawaii, even with Australia and Mexico. Large grouping of small islands, hidden from even the most sophisticated maps.

Climate:

Beaches are comprised of Quartz Sand, white in color, and cool the touch, even on the hottest day. Tropical, near equator?

Buildings, once used by the Japanese during WWII prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor, now owned and used by the USA for Top Secret training exercises. Only the most elite train here, and even they don’t know where it is. The buildings are kept in full operational use, and often rebuilt after training causes collateral damage.

Landscape:

Peppered with Cherry Blossom Trees, Palms, Oak, and Spruce. A reminder of many former residents.

No large beasts, there are monkeys, birds, reptiles, sea turtles.

Each Island is within visibility of another, barely. One could swim from one to another, however, white sharks are known to travel out this far and visit nearby reefs. Attacks are rare, but can happen when blood is in the water.

Technology:

The island is fully wired with generators and satellites, wireless cameras and motion sensors are kept running 24 hours a day.

Wiki for Ashland OR

Ashland is a city in Jackson County, in the State of Oregon. It lies along Interstate 5 slightly north of the California border and near the south end of the Bear Creek Valley, an arm of the Rogue Valley. As of July 1, 2013, the city's population was estimated to be 20,713.[5]

The city is the home of Southern Oregon University (SOU) and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF). These are important to Ashland's economy, which also depends on restaurants, galleries, and retail stores that cater to playgoers and other visitors. Lithia Park along Ashland Creek, historic buildings, and a paved intercity bike trail provide additional tourist attractions.

Ashland, originally called Ashland Mills, was named after Ashland County, Ohio, the original home of founder Abel Helman, and secondarily for Ashland, Kentucky, where other founders had family connections. Ashland has a mayor-council government assisted by citizen committees. Historically, its liberal politics have differed, often sharply, with much of the rest of southwest Oregon.

Ashland is at 1,949 feet (594 m) above sea level[3] in the foothills of the Siskiyou and Cascade ranges, about 15 miles (24 km) north of the California border on Interstate 5 (I-5).[19] About 10 miles (16 km) south of Ashland and 5 miles (8 km) north of the California border is Siskiyou Summit, which at 4,310 feet (1,310 m) is the highest point on I-5.[20] Ashland is about 12 miles (19 km) south of Medford and about 300 miles (480 km) south of Portland.[21] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of about 6.6 square miles (17.1 km2), all land.[2]

Climate:

Although the mountain peaks in this zone receive up to 120 inches (3,000 mm) of precipitation a year, the urban areas and the valleys in which they lie generally get 20 inches (510 mm) or less. This valley climate is particularly good for growing fruit, especially pears, and for producing other crops and farm goods such as hay, grain, poultry, and beef.[23]

Cloud cover in nearby Medford varies from an average of 21 percent in July to 86 percent in December.[24] On average, precipitation falls in Ashland on 114 days each year and totals about 20 inches (510 mm).[25] The average annual snowfall is only 1.4 inches (3.6 cm).[25] The average relative humidity, measured at 4 p.m. daily, is 47 percent in Medford, varying from 26 percent in July to 76 percent in December.[26]

The coolest month is December, with an average high temperature of 47 °F (8 °C), and the warmest month is July, with an average high of about 88 °F (31 °C).[25] The highest temperature ever recorded in Ashland was 108 °F (42 °C), observed in August 1981, and the record low of −4 °F (−20 °C) occurred in December 1972.[27]

Demographics:

·         In the census of 2010, there were 20,078 people, 9,409 households, and 4,542 families residing in the city.

Economy:

Income from tourism is important to Ashland's economy. A large number of restaurants, galleries, and retail stores cater to thousands of visitors who attend plays each year at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. In 2011, the festival sold more than 390,000 tickets to its theater productions.[34]

The town's largest employer is Southern Oregon University (SOU), which has a faculty and staff of more than 750.[34] In addition to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the university, health-service providers make significant contributions to the economy. Businesses related to outdoor recreation, transportation, technology, and light manufacturing are also important.[34] In 2010, the Shakespeare Festival employed about 500 people, the hospital about 400, the public schools about 300, and the City of Ashland about 250.[35] The Bathroom Readers' Press, which produces the Uncle John's Bathroom Reader books, is based in Ashland and San Diego.[36] Brammo, specializing in battery-electric motorcycles, was based in Ashland but recently moved to Talent.[37]

Points of Interest:

The National Fish and Wildlife Forensics Laboratory in Ashland is the world's only laboratory dedicated to solving crimes against wildlife. Using forensic science, experts at the laboratory help wildlife officers to investigate possible crimes against animals and to establish links between victims and suspects in cases that go to court.[44] The laboratory has assisted the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) and foreign agencies concerned with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITIES).[45]

Island Wake Up Call

Ash came to himself blinded by a terrible light, which hurt his eyes. He rolled over onto his belly, and planted his face into his pillow... No, this wasn't a pillow, it was... sand? He accidentally breathed some in and began coughing uncontrollably. He would have to get his bearings, but first he'd have to get his senses. He rose to his hands and knees and calmed his mind, slowed his heart rate. Focus. That's what he needed right now. His eyes still hurt too much to open, but he didn't need them just yet.

Birds. Sand. Wind in trees. Water washing ashore in a quiet steady cadence. He was back on the island? The sand between his fingers was cold to the touch, but the sun on his back and face was quite warm. These had to be white sand islands. He was back to the training center? Had he ever left? What happened.... wait... What is that?

***********

Eta was thrashing around, blindly looking for something or someone to attack. It was only after she ran out of breath that she realized she was alone. Her eyesight was coming back, but it was still much to bright to fully open her eyes, even with the clothe that she'd tied around her face to block the sun.

All she could see was trees, water, sand. Now that she was too tired to fight.... nothing... she could hear the sounds of the island herself. There was one sound that was not familiar... A rustling in the trees, less than half a klick away.

****************

Sir

What is it seargent?!

Motion sensors dedect movement on one of the south islands.

We haven't trained down there in months. Are you sure it's not those stupid Monkey's again?

We checked sir, camera footage is rough from the distance, but we captured this image.

Well I'll be... Get a unit down there now, and go in armed, we don't know what to expect.

Yes sir

With that the door closed and left the General alone. Where have those two been?!

Dark Room - Ashlund

10/18/14 | Writing Practice

Once seated the light was immediately absent. Completely absent. The only thing Ash could see was the flashes of white dots dancing around his eyes from having been in the light moments earlier. What utter and stark contrast to the room he was in. The sound... or lack of sound... in this room was astonishing. It was though sound itself was being sucked out. He could hear nothing but a ringing for the first few minutes. After a while, the ringing subsided and he could hear the beating of his own heart, and the sloshing of bodily fluids throughout his own body.

Eventually, after what felt like an hour, but it was probably only minutes, he found that even these sounds faded into the background of his attention. He could almost hear his own thoughts. As though that voice in his head, that was always present, telling him what to do, and where to go, and how to act, watch out for that... don't say that... oh man, why did you do that for? It was as though the inner voice became almost audible. As  though he could hear himself think. Or rather as though his thoughts could speak to him audibly. It was an odd sensation, but occupying his mind was the only thing he could do. He'd never admit it to a captor, but solitary confinement was his favorite part of being a prisoner of war. He enjoyed self time, and silence. Accusation follows on the heals of this. Anytime he's alone, it starts. What you should have done differently.

His concentration snapped into focus suddenly with the feeling that he was not alone in this room. He'd known before he entered the room that camera, most likely equipped with monitoring capabilities were on him, and he was being observed... but that wasn't it. He felt the air in the room change, as though someone had entered the room with him. He could hear breathing in the room. He wasn't tied to the chair, he could get up, but where to? He couldn't see, he'd memorized the layout though. He knew the entrance he came from, and he didn't see any other known entry ways. Ash slowed his breathing, and observed with his four remaining senses for any clue as to the whereabouts and intention of the new participant.

***************************

Dr... It's beginning... the biometrics just spiked. The presence is there...

Good, good... let's see how he does. The previous test subjects had no where near the discipline that Mr. Ashlund does. This should be an interesting observation.
